DMC - DJ JEPPA 2009 & 2010 UK CHAMPION

Welcome to our articles and feature page where we aim to bring you some exclusive interview and articles from the wonderful world of mastering and music related topics.

The Cutting Suite teams up with studio regular DJ Jeppa for a brief interview and low down on things to come !

So what is DMC ?

Well for those that don't know here is a quick run down on the biggest DJ competition on the planet.

What began as a humble DJ service for DJ's around the world has now grown in to a fully fledged brand and the most prestigious DJ competition in the world. DMC was founded by none other than Tony Prince a DJ himself who in the 80s put together the organisation to collectively bring all DJ's under one roof. 27 years on and after a number of hard fought battles, DMC can pride itself in helping to launch the careers of many top DJs around the globe and also grabbing its share of the limelight with press and TV features including the Richard and Judy Show, MTV, Blue Peter and even playing a major part in a plot on CSI NY.

DMC redefined the role and image of the DJ by taking the new boundaries of creativity to a new level just arming the DJ with two turntables a mixer and a bag of vinyl records. This resulted in a number of worthy champions from all corners of the globe.

DJ Cashmoney, Qbert, Mixmaster Mike, Craze and A Trak are a few instantly recognisable ones.

With some of the biggest names and also biggest venues such as Wembley Arena, Royal Albert Hall, The O2, DMC can quite proudly state it has accomplished great things in its time.

DJ Jeppa UK DMC Champion two years in succession drops in at The Cutting Suite and in between a Mastering and Mixdown session discusses tales since becoming a DMC champion and representing the UK at the World Finals in 2009 and 2010.

Hi Jeppa how the session going ?

Yeah all good sounding nice in there.

So how long you been DJing for now ?

Mmm good question quite a long time. 16 years really ... yeah something like that.

What made you get in to DJing ?

Well I love music in general and as a hobby like Djing and playing music, its great fun.

So you always aimed to be a DMC champion ?

Well actually until I heard and knew about it no, but once I saw and heard what these guy where doing I was  hooked like something else.

Well you reached your goal and becoming a UK Champion two years in a row is brilliant, what happened this year ?

Well to be honest I can't blame anyone other than myself sometimes you need to step back and look at the game plan and see whats different, technology etc and change the game in accordance. I think I overlooked things a little.

So does this mean you are retiring from Competitions and battles etc ?

No way I love it, it has brought me here so far and will take me further, at the mo I am on a little vacation from turntabilism but I will be back.

Did losing hurt you at all ?

Losing was an inspiration to improve and look at myself and Serato opened new elements in my craft as a DJ.

So will we see you at DMC ?

Most definitely whether in the crowd or judging and maybe a showcase here and there you will see DJ Jeppa somewhere I love it.

So tell us about the skill and difference since last year  ?

Well we have technology and we have new styles always coming through, scratch patterns are always being created so this year I am sure we will have some surprises.

Serato and the Dj ?

The Serato thing takes the whole meaning up a notch just when you thought it was getting boring along come these guys and blow it up to the next level... so much to learn and do with it, its like learning to walk again. lol

So what now for DJ Jeppa ?

Well I am here today working on some ideas and getting some stuff Mastered so I can test it when I am playing out, production learning and chilling... really.

So your a bit of a DnB head I heard ?

Well I do love DnB but love all sorts of music but right now I am on the Dubstep love it.

What do you mean your on it ?

Hahahh funny. I am producing, writing, programming and learning love the sounds and styles and I am aiming at dropping some Dubstep tunes... but that will be next year.

So what music is influencing you at the moment ?

Well my favourite music is DnB and I love dubstep so I would be honest saying that they are probably the biggest influences on me and my music right now.

Going Back to the DJing side of you who's your favourite DJ ?

I love that question there are so many DJ's that I like but for me it has to be Tigerstyles.

What your favourite scratch one that never bores you ?

The crab I can crab all day long and love watching DJ's crabbing away.

What tunes grab you at the moment ?

Mmm do like Skrillex and it probably the Foreign Beggars tune that he has done.

So last but not the least anything you wanna tell peeps on being a Scratch Maestro ?

Practise practise practise you can never do enough just keep at it and pushing boundaries with styles, patterns, speed and knowledge.
